I am proud to say that I have virtually no painted art on my walls. But there is graphic art and to me that's even better.

| 1. Saul Bass - Vertigo I'll start with the poster from Hitchcock's Vertigo. It is perhaps the best poster ever created in my opinion. The colors, the lines, the intriguing images - it does have everything. Created by Saul Bass by the way. |
2. The London underground - Harry Beck Harry Beck, an electrical engineer who worked for London Transport, first conceived the classic diagrammatic tube in 1933. The map has evolved over the years, and is now an acknowledged piece of outstanding graphic design. |
3. The Chair poster by Vitra I don't think you can really name an artist for this one but it's still great. 224 chairs and for a chairfreak like me, well that's just what dreams are made of. |
4. The problem we all live with by N. Rockwell Some would call this a painting and some call it a poster. Anyway, this is Norman Rockwell at his most serious. I've always loved his naturalistic paintings and this one is his best. |
5. Knoll posters by Herbert Matter The famous furniture manufacturer Knoll not only made great chairs but superb posters to market them. The artist was Herbert Matter and he created a personal style by looking at objects from a different angle, literally. |
6. Bauhaus by J. Schmidt The Bauhaus school attendees has inspired many many designers and they are to this day the most legendary design/artist group. Who knows what could have been if the fascists hadn't stopped them. The poster is designed by Joost Schmidt for the Bauhaus exhibition in Weimar, 1923. |
Solidarity by Tomasz Sarnecki I have to include a Polish poster in this list as they probably are, or at least were, the most innovative poster designers in the world. This one is by Tomasz Sarnecki. It's appropriately called High Noon/Solidarity, created for the 1989 elections in Poland. There is something naive, overtly symbolic about it but it's still so simple and brilliant. |
Constructivism by G. & V. Stenberg You just have to love the old Russian posters of the 20's and 30's. A bit of Art Deco, a touch of avantgarde and a pinch of eastern style. Russian Constructivist film poster utilizing photomontage, designed by Georgi and Vladimar Stenberg 1929. |
Arabia by Tapio Wirkkala I have to include a Finnish one as well. I chose the drawing by Tapio Wirkkala for the porcelain manufacturer Arabia. I've never heard the story behind it, but he vase is Rut Bryk's, Wirkkala's wife. There weren't that many printed so they are rare today.

Anatomy of a murder by Saul Bass I have to end with another one by Saul Bass, since he is my favorite. Another movie poster that sort of says it all but still leaves you wondering. |
